Mission Statement

St. Boniface is a Roman Catholic Church ministering to the urban Louisville community since 1836. We are a community formed by the word of God, the Sacraments and the tradition of the Church. We strive to be a catalyst for positive change in our neighborhood. St. Boniface is uniquely positioned to serve the needs of the entire community from youth to elders. We put our faith into action through a variety of social outreach programs. In these efforts, we strive to be a refuge for those in need and offer hope to our surrounding community.

Established 1836

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
16th of March, 2008

“Christ became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name.” Philippians 2:8-9

At Jesus’ crucifixion, bystanders taunted him, “save yourself, if you are the Son of God.” Jesus reveals on the cross that as the Son of God he would not save himself. Indeed, Jesus embraced death and, in that embrace, overcame death. Jesus, fully human and fully divine. - Living Liturgy™, Palm Sunday 2008

Today’s Focus: Beyond Civility to Love

Community matters. The civic community matters. In most nations of the world, though seemingly not so much in this county these days, community matters more than the rights of the individual. This is not to say that the individual has no worth, but rather that individuals live in conscious service to the legitimate needs of the community. - Living the Word: Scriptures Reflections for Sundays and Holy Days, Palm Sunday 2008

Stewardship A Lifetime of Opportunity, Responsibility, Accountability

“While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.” Matthew 26:26

Vatican II says of the Eucharist, “If this celebration is to be sincere, it must lead to various works of charity and mutual help, as well as to missionary activity and to different forms of Christian witness.” The Eucharist does not end at Mass.

Question of the Week

Who in your life has suffered for you, and for whom are you willing to suffer?

Bicentennial Moment

On March 18, 1958, Trappist priest Thomas Merton was visiting Louisville from his way home at Gethsemani. As he stood at the central downtown intersection of Fourth and Walnut Streets, he had an intense experience with the crowds he saw there. Later he would write in Conjectures of A Guilty Bystander: “In Louisville, at the corner of Fourth and Walnut, in the center of the shopping district, I was suddenly overwhelmed with the realization that I loved these people, that they were mine, and I was theirs, that we could not be alien to one another…I have the immense joy of being a person, a member of the race in which God himself became incarnate….If only everyone could realize this. But it cannot be explained. There is no way of telling people that they are walking around, shining like the sun.”

The 108 year old tradition of raising the statue of the Risen Christ

PLEASE NOTE: Beginning this year, 2008, the 108 year old tradition of raising the statue of the Risen Christ will take place at the end of the 11:00 Mass on Easter Sunday, NOT at the Vigil on Holy Saturday. We need some strong men to actually raise the statue. If you are able, please see Bill Lincoln after Mass. We ask you to pass the word along to anyone you know who might want to see this bit of drama.

Easter Collection

Next weekend, we will take up the Easter Sunday collection. This collection will be administered by the Catholic Education Foundation, a separately incorporated, independent organization that supports lifelong formation in the Archdiocese of Louisville. Specifically the collection will fund tuition assistance, technology, parish religious education programs, youth ministry, and adult faith formation. The Easter Collection makes possible many programs and services that truly make a difference in the teaching ministry of the Church.
